Church of Metamorphosis Sotiros

The first church of the housing was dedicated to Metamorphosis Sotiros and its building was originally prefabricated. The first mass at the church took place on the Holy Week of 1978.

Just two years after the first mass, the church had to undergo repairs. In particular, the ceiling was elevated since the church had been “suffocating due to its low height”. Later, in 1982, marbles were added, whereas a plain belfry was also built. Additionally, the “Metamorphosis” Christian Centre was constructed next to the church.

Since the beginning of the 80s, there was a need for a larger church. This thought was impressed in a Community Assembly, during which everybody agreed to the construction of the new church. Thus, on December 30, 1988, the agreement documents were signed by the president of the Church Committee at the time, Mr. Mitsides, and the contractor. The construction works began on the first days of 1989.

At the beginning of the 90s, on May 15, 1991, former Archbishop Chrysostomos I placed the foundation stone and five years later, on October 13, 1996, he performed the inauguration ceremony of the church. Palm Vesper was the first mass that took place at the new church of Metamorphosis on April 10, 1993, although construction works had not yet been completed. In particular, construction works were completed in 1994, whereas the church was being equipped until 1996, without however covering all its shortages.

The Holy Archbishopric of Cyprus, the Republic of Cyprus, the Women’s Christian Association and the Metamorphosis Christian Centre contributed financially to the construction of the new church. Moreover, several parish churches, monasteries and banks, as well as many Christians, both from the Housing of Anthoupolis and the rest of Cyprus donated money for the construction of the church.

In the southwest side of the church of Metamorphosis there is a Chapel dedicated to Agia Eirini Chrysovalanto. It is noteworthy that the biggest part of the cost for the construction of the chapel of Agia Eirini was covered in the memory of Marios Eftechiou.

Chapels also exist within the main church of the community. One of the chapels of the main church is dedicated to Saints Nicolaos, Raphael and Eirini and its construction cost was covered by the family of Paraskevi Hadjivasileiou. Moreover, a chapel dedicated to Agios Christodoulos also exists in the catechetical school’s hall.
